“The Spider and the Flea”
A spider and a flea lived together and
brewed beer in an egg shell. One day the spider fell in and scalded herself.
The flea screamed, and the door asked why she screamed and the flea explained
the story. So the door creaked and the broom asked why it creaked and it said
“Why not?” and explained the story. So the broom swept and a cart asked why it
swept and it said “Why not?” and explained the story. So the cart ran off and a
pile of ashes asked the cart why it was running and it said “Why not?” and
explained the story. So the ashes burned and the tree asked why it burned and
it said “Why not?” and explained the story. So the tree shook all its leaves
off and the girl asked why and it said “Why not?” and explained the story. So
the girl broke her water pitcher, and the streamlet asked why and she said “Why
not?” and explained the story. So the streamlet flowed and flowed and flowed,
eventually swallowing up all of them.

I guess in the olden days a series of
events could count as a story.
Or is the streamlet supposed to represent
time, meaning no matter what happens, it swallows us all. But I thought “… time is the fire in which we
burn.” :D
