I’ve
been writing since my college years in the mid, to late 90’s.  I’d write and just be happy that I wrote
something.  But I guess at some point in
late 2004 I decided to start keeping track of my writing as some motivational
thing.  So I have a record of how many
words I’ve written each day since January 1, 2005.  When I say written, I mean just my fiction
stories.  I don’t count blogs, or poetry,
and if I revise something and cut ten words from it, that goes into my count as
-10.  Hey, I came up with those rules
years ago, I just follow them now.  But
anyway, not counting the tens of thousands of words I wrote pre-2005, today I
hit – surprise surprise – 700,000 words.
That’s five or six novels, but mostly in stories of a thousand words or
so.
My
writing has slowed down in the last few years (it took me a little over a year
to go from 400,000 to 500,000, a little over two years to go from 500,000 to
600,000, and now a little less than three years to go from 600,000 to 700,000)
but I’m trying some new motivational things to get me writing more.  As such, I may just have to set a goal of
when I’ll reach 1,000,000 words.  I’ll
think on that and let you know.
